Martin Erich Philipp was born in Zwickau, Germany, studied art and applied arts at two of Dresden’s best-known academies, before settling in Dölzschen discrict of the city, where he spent all his life. He is remembered today for creating elegantly composed color woodcuts, using sophisticated color combinations that suited his subject matters. Philipp liked to depict animals, in particular exotic birds. But he also carved beautiful floral compositions, some rather stiff, some very lifelike.
